Miller Motorsports Park
Thursday, September 25th, 2008This past weekend we had a race in salt lake city at miller motorsports park. This is one of my better tracks but I would not say one of my favorites. It is the longest road course in North America at just over 4.5 miles. It has 23 turns 17 of them however are all about the same speed and in third gear which makes it almost boring.
After New Jersey both cars ( #41, #39) were damaged heavily but the crew worked really hard to get the cars back in working order. We rolled off the trailer and faced some issues. Friday during the first practice we lost power steering which cut the session short. However, the crew got that issue fix and we were ready for practice 2. Although the car was good and andy and I were fast ( 4th and 3rd in the session) we faced more issues and this time it was with the anti-lock brakes.
Qualifying was saturday morning. I was feeling good about the car and knew that we would do good. I got a couple good laps in right away in the session ( good enough for second). I had a lap going that was going to be good enough for pole however a off-pace competitor didn’t see that I caught him and thus I got slowed significantly. But I would settle for 2nd.
In the race my plan was do just keep the car clean and had the car over to Andy Lally to bring home. I raced at my own steady pace while in the lead and at one point opened up a 20 second lead. About an hour and twenty min i pitted to turn the car over to Andy. At this point my job was done and it was supposed to be smooth sailing for Andy. However, about 6 laps from the end the motor decided to give up which lead to Andy having to park the car. Although the result is unfortunate, I still feel good about my stint. The race will be televised on speed channel so make sure to tune in (and turn it off with 6 laps to go)…
