TRG - Strong Run at Sebring Yields Fourth Place

120312_Sebring_wheel_upSebring, FL (March 19, 2012) - The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida, continued to be an elusive target for TRG. Sebring, the longest-running endurance race in North America celebrated its 60th anniversary in style. Not only an American Le Mans Series event, this year's event was also the opening round of the FIA's World Endurance Championship.

Throughout its 60 year history, Sebring's reputation for being hard on both drivers and equipment has cemented its reputation as a testbed for the world's finest sports cars. From this year's debut of the new Delta Wing to ALMS' use of alternative fuels, the race attracts elite manufacturers and teams from around the globe.

120317_Sebring"It was one heck of a race, with all of the expected highs and lows of an endurance classic like this," said team owner Kevin Buckler. "It was a long week and the team performed beautifully. We had a competitive car and a strong team. The drivers did a great job but a small intermittent electrical problem cost us several laps."

The biggest issue seemed to be an electrical gremlin that created problems ranging from increased fuel consumption to erratic information being displayed on the dashboard, forcing extra pit stops.
At one point mid-way through, it seemed like the race was really up for grabs. The teams ahead of TRG managed to avoid major issues, however. The result - TRG's #66 Porsche that started seventh in GTC, finished a valiant fourth.

"Emilio did a fantastic job for us. This was his first time at Sebring. It's a TOUGH race for the drivers and equipment, and we came out without a scratch on the car. Marc was his usual `no mistakes' perfect teammate, and Spencer was a strong closer. We came up a little short but we gained some valuable points for the ALMS Championship. We're looking forward to a great run at Long Beach."

Stay tuned! TRG will have exciting announcements coming later this week!

TRG - Sebring Update - 3 hour mark

Sebring, FL (March 17, 2012) – After three hours of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida, TRG has begun to move up through the GTC field.

Sebring is known for being hard on equipment, and the 60th anniversary edition is living up to that reputation. Before the green flag flew, cars were already damaged from contact.

Driving the first stint in the #66 TRG Porsche, Emilio DiGuida stayed clear of all of the carnage, and ran consistently through the first hour and a half, handing the car off to Spencer Pumpelly. Just before the three hour mark, Pumpelly began TRG’s move forward, picking up two spots. A full course yellow just after the three hour mark allowed TRG to stay out of the pits and pick up a lap on the class leading #34 car.

TRG is currently running fifth in GTC, and is looking for another yellow flag to make another driver change, handing the car over to Marc Bunting.

You can watch the race live on ESPN3.com

TRG Announces Strong Trio for Season Opener at Sebring

Petaluma, CA (February 28, 2011)- Following a successful return to the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron in 2010, taking two victories including at the famed Petit Le Mans, TRG will return in 2011 to the ALMS GTC category.
Beginning with the 59th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 19, TRG will field its traditional no. 66 entry for drivers’ Duncan Ende, Alain Li, and Spencer Pumpelly. Ende, who has been part of TRG’s development system since 2007, raced in three ALMS events in 2010 with the team, including the victory at Petit Le Mans. Joining the team for his first race in the series will be Alain Li. A successful competitor in several international series, Li will be running in his first ever Sebring 12 Hours and should be a strong addition. Finally, Spencer Pumpelly joins the team for his sixth season with TRG. Recently winning this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, Pumpelly joins the team as a proven winner, and will take an important role throughout the season.

Petaluma, CA (March 6, 2012) – TRG opens its quest for an American Le Mans Series GTC class championship at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida with a driver lineup that should certainly be among the GTC class favorites March 17.

TRG sportscar veteran Spencer Pumpelly, Venezuelan standout Emilio DiGuida and TRG former champion Marc Bunting hope to bring what has been an elusive Sebring win to the team’s impressive list of victories and 150-plus podiums in its illustrious history. Winning North America’s oldest endurance classic during its 60th anniversary year would be particularly special as it is the only major endurance race where TRG has not stood atop the podium.

“We have come close several times so we want this one, and we want it badly!” said TRG team owner Kevin Buckler. “When I think about all the great wins this team has had over the years at Petit Le Mans, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Road America and Le Mans, I become very focused on wanting to add this great race to our trophy case. We’ve got the drivers, the equipment and the team that can do it this year, and we are ready.”

A year ago, TRG drove its Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car to second in GTC class, with an incredibly strong drive by Pumpelly, Duncan Ende and Alain Li.

emilio_diguida_2“We had a really good car last year,” said Pumpelly, “and everyone had good runs. It was close and we’ll be after it again this year.”

DiGuida joined TRG nearly a year ago and had solid runs at both Road America and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in addition to being a stand-out at the Rolex 24 earlier this year. Bunting, a former Rolex season series champion ran three times with TRG in 2011 at Mid-Ohio, Mosport and Baltimore. His second place at Mosport was part of back-to-back, one-two finishes by the TRG team.

A great start at Sebring could set the early stage for a championship run. Last year saw the ALMS GTC class come down to the final race. Beginning with its second place finish at last year’s Sebring, the team produced four victories, including the one-two finishes at Mid-Ohio and Lime Rock as well as a third place finish at Petit Le Mans.

Pumpelly is in his sixth season with the TRG. The two-time Rolex 24 at Daytona winner anchors the team with a solid chance to win. One of sport car racing’s most highly decorated drivers, he has driven and won in ALMS as well as the Grand-Am Rolex Series and World Challenge Series. A respected and sought after coach, Pumpelly is a valuable and proven asset to the team not only for his on-track knowledge and success but also his ability to guide and mentor many newcomers in TRG’s Driver Development program.

“Spence is a team leader,” stated Buckler. “He knows his way around every track, figures out every nuance with the car and relates really, really well with his teammates. I can’t say enough about how much he brings to the team.”

110806_MidOhio_CA8F4353DiGuida is a veteran of sports car racing with five championship wins in Venezuela. He has also participated in multiple endurance races in the GT de las America in Bogota, Colombia. In 2011, he saw his first ALMS action at Road America with a 6th place finish, and again drove for TRG at Laguna Seca. Emilio shared the all-South American TRG entry at this year’s Daytona 24 Hours, a drive that saw the car steadily climb through the GT class.

“Emilio did a great job for us last year,” said Buckler. “He keeps getting better and better. I was so proud of him earlier this year in Daytona as he emerged as one of our team leaders with a really solid run and laps times that were incredible. We are going to have a really good shot at this for Sebring.”

Marc Bunting, who won the 2006 Rolex GT Championship with TRG, has a long history with the team. During the 2006 championship run, Bunting earned seven victories as well as a podium finish at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“Marc is very, very fast but also extremely patient and level headed, which is crucial at a race as grueling as Sebring,” noted Buckler. “We have also been friends for years and I am both happy and proud to have him back as part of our squad at Sebring.”

So the stage is set. Twelve grueling hours. Three inspired drivers. A World Class Team. One great race.

The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring with its 10:30 a.m. EDT green flag will be seen live on ESPN3.com along with special feature coverage from ABC on Sunday, March 18 beginning at 12:00 noon.

TRG - Ready for the 60th Sebring 12 hours

Petaluma, CA (March 3, 2012) – The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring kicks of the American Le Mans Series season for The Racer's Group (TRG), and team owner Kevin Buckler has his sights set on two that got away last year.

First on the agenda is a win at Sebring. It is the only major sports car race that has eluded Buckler in his 20 years of racing, and he is focused on adding that trophy to his 150-plus race trophy display case. Second, is an American Le Mans Series championship, another feat that has eluded TRG.

A year ago, TRG went into the season finale at Petit Le Mans with a chance to pull that off, needing a win and a little misfortune to eventual champion Black Swan to claim the Series crown. Having won the previous year's Petit as well as the Rolex 24, TRG was also going for the never-been-done-before "Trifecta" of winning the three big endurance races in North America back-to-back. TRG had turned in an incredible season to date, with four victories, including one-two finishes at Mid-Ohio and Lime Rock as well as a second place finish at Sebring. A third place finish at Petit Le Mans placed the Buckler group second for the ALMS Series GTC class crown but left the team more determined than ever to change all that in 2012.

While every race is important, 2012 marks the 60th running of America's oldest endurance classic. There is certainly extra incentive to win, and Buckler is playing his cards close to the vest this year, waiting until next week to announce TRG's driver line-up for 2012.

sebring_2011_2_cars

"We are all so excited to be returning to Sebring again this year," stated Buckler. "We have a strong line-up to announce, and we are going for it in 2012. All of our programs are solid, and we are back in a big way...stay tuned."

The Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring will also be the first of the FIA's World Endurance Classic which means that top sports car teams from all over the world will fill an anticipated 64-car, six-class field.

"The competition will be amazing," continued Buckler. "The Sebring course is legendary for being a rough ride. A really fast lap here is a violent experience. Not only does that take its toll on the car and drivers, but having a great sense of all the other cars at varying speeds that are around you is crucial. You have to be cautious, patient AND aggressive all at the same time, because it has become a 12-hour sprint race despite the fact that it is an endurance classic."

The 12-hour race with its 10:30 a.m. EDT green flag will be seen live on ESPN3.com along with special feature coverage from ABC on Sunday, March 18 beginning at 12:00 noon.

PCA Visits TRG

Kevin_with_Vern_Rogers_john_jaackson

On Saturday morning, The Racers’ Group hosted Redwood Region, PCA. The timing of the visit could not have been better. The team had finally arrived back from both the Rolex 24 at Daytona Daytona and Sebring Winter Test. Also, earlier in the week, TRG took delivery of a brand new 2012 911 GT3 Cup.

With the entire mortorsports operation at the Petaluma Headquarters, it’s easier for TRG to cater to enthusiasts and weekend racers. Four Porsche owners had the opportunity to put their cars up on a lift and get expert advice from TRG team members. Visitors were also treated to a sale on the team’s vast array of spares.

TRG owner and CEO, Kevin Buckler welcomed the group, gave an overview of the GT3 Cup car, shared stories of current and past racing seasons, and proudly spoke of the most recent awards for his other company, Adobe Road Winery.
PCA members had a wonderful time, summed up by Redwood Region member Steve Vest. “(Kevin) has done so much for all of us enthusiasts of the Porsche marque by creating TRG and competing at such a high level of competitive consistancy over all these years!! His enthusiastic persuit of excellence is matched by only a few in racing!”
